How It Works

Linoleic acid is incorporated into epidermal lipids and is required for the formation of specialized omega-O-acylceramides that help create an orderly, low-permeability barrier.

In essential-fatty-acid-deficiency models, topical linoleic acid corrected local barrier defects. In human volunteers with detergent- or solvent-damaged skin, a blend containing linoleic acid plus several ceramides, cholesterol, and phytosphingosine improved aspects of barrier recovery compared with a less-complete lipid mixture.

These findings also show that barrier lipids work as a coordinated system. Linoleic acid is valuable alone as an emollient, but biomimetic ratios and protection from oxidation can materially affect performance.
