Botanical Oil & Antioxidant

Hippophae Rhamnoides Fruit/Seed Oil

Nourishing, hydrating, healing

Key Benefits

  • Nourishes dry-feeling skin
  • Supports the moisture barrier
  • Improves softness and suppleness
  • Provides antioxidant support

How It Works

Fatty acids spread over the stratum corneum to reduce friction, smooth flaking texture, and support the lipid matrix that limits water loss. Seed and fruit fractions contribute different balances of unsaturated and saturated fatty acids.

Carotenoids, tocopherols, and other minor compounds can add antioxidant activity, though their levels vary widely by extraction and storage. Formulation, oxidation control, and concentration determine how the oil performs in a finished product.

Ingredient Details

INCI Name: Hippophae Rhamnoides Fruit Oil / Hippophae Rhamnoides Seed Oil

Ingredient Type: Botanical Fruit & Seed Oil

Best For

Normal to dry skin · Rough or tight-feeling skin · Barrier-support routines · Antioxidant-focused care

What It Is

This INCI describes oil obtained from the fruit and/or seeds of the sea buckthorn shrub. It is an emollient botanical oil whose fatty acids and minor constituents differ according to which plant part is used.

It may range from golden to deep orange because of naturally occurring pigments, especially in fruit oil. Color intensity alone does not establish potency, purity, or suitability for a particular skin type.

What It Does

It softens the outer skin layer and supplements surface lipids, helping reduce roughness and moisture-loss discomfort. Antioxidant constituents also provide supportive protection against oxidative stress.

Cell and animal studies suggest hydration, barrier, and calming potential, but human topical clinical evidence is still developing. It should not be described as healing disease or replacing treatment for dermatitis or wounds.

Hippophae Rhamnoides Fruit/Seed Oil FAQs

Common questions about this ingredient in skincare.

What is sea buckthorn fruit/seed oil?
{"type":"root","children":[{"type":"paragraph","children":[{"type":"text","value":"It is a botanical emollient derived from the fruit pulp, seeds, or a blend of both from Hippophae rhamnoides. It contains fatty acids plus variable amounts of carotenoids, tocopherols, and other oil-soluble compounds."}]}]}
Are sea buckthorn fruit oil and seed oil the same?
{"type":"root","children":[{"type":"paragraph","children":[{"type":"text","value":"No. Fruit-pulp oil is commonly richer in palmitoleic acid and carotenoids, while seed oil usually contains more linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids. A combined INCI may represent a blend, so its exact composition depends on sourcing."}]}]}
How does sea buckthorn oil support hydration?
{"type":"root","children":[{"type":"paragraph","children":[{"type":"text","value":"Its fatty acids condition the outer skin layer and help support the lipid film that slows water loss. This can make dry or rough skin feel softer, smoother, and more comfortable."}]}]}
Can sea buckthorn oil treat eczema or wounds?
{"type":"root","children":[{"type":"paragraph","children":[{"type":"text","value":"No cosmetic ingredient should be presented as treating eczema, burns, or wounds. Early laboratory and animal research is interesting, but medical skin conditions require appropriate professional diagnosis and care."}]}]}
Will sea buckthorn oil stain skin?
{"type":"root","children":[{"type":"paragraph","children":[{"type":"text","value":"Highly pigmented fruit oil can be orange and may temporarily tint very light fabric or skin when used at high levels. Properly formulated cosmetic products typically control concentration, dispersion, and staining risk."}]}]}
Can sea buckthorn oil be used every day?
{"type":"root","children":[{"type":"paragraph","children":[{"type":"text","value":"It can be used daily in a well-formulated product if it suits your skin. Those who are acne-prone or sensitive should assess the complete formula and patch-test rather than assuming all botanical oils will behave the same."}]}]}
