Biotin

Supports healthy hair, skin, and nails

Key Benefits

  • Supports normal macronutrient metabolism
  • Helps meet biotin needs when dietary intake is inadequate
  • Supports normal hair, skin, and nail maintenance in the context of adequate nutrition
  • Provides an essential water-soluble B vitamin

How It Works

Biotin is covalently attached to several carboxylase enzymes. These enzymes participate in fatty-acid synthesis, gluconeogenesis, and the metabolism of certain amino acids, making biotin essential to normal cellular energy and biosynthetic pathways.

Hair, skin, and nail changes are recognized signs of deficiency, but correcting a deficiency is different from taking extra biotin when status is already adequate. More biotin does not necessarily translate into faster hair growth or stronger nails.

Ingredient Details

INCI Name: Biotin

Ingredient Type: Vitamin

Best For

People with a clinician-identified biotin deficiency · Individuals whose diet or medical circumstances may limit biotin status · People seeking basic B-vitamin nutritional support · Those using biotin under healthcare guidance

What It Is

An essential water-soluble B vitamin known as vitamin B7.

It occurs naturally in foods and is also included in multivitamins, B-complex products, and standalone supplements.

What It Does

Supports the activity of biotin-dependent enzymes used in normal energy and nutrient metabolism.

Adequate biotin helps maintain normal physiology, while cosmetic benefits from supplementation are most plausible when a deficiency is present.

Biotin FAQs

Common questions about this ingredient in skincare.

What is biotin?
Biotin is vitamin B7, a water-soluble vitamin needed by enzymes that help metabolize fats, carbohydrates, and amino acids.
Does biotin make hair grow?
Biotin can correct hair changes caused by deficiency, but deficiency is uncommon and evidence for improving hair growth in people with adequate biotin status is limited.
Does biotin strengthen nails?
Small uncontrolled studies suggest possible benefit for some brittle nails, but strong clinical evidence is limited. Nail problems can have many causes and may warrant professional evaluation.
Can I get enough biotin from food?
Most people obtain adequate biotin from a varied diet. Sources include eggs, meat, fish, nuts, seeds, and certain vegetables.
Can biotin interfere with blood tests?
Yes. Supplemental biotin can distort some laboratory assays, including certain thyroid, hormone, and cardiac tests. Tell your clinician and laboratory what dose you take before testing.
Is more biotin always better?
No. High doses have not been shown to provide extra beauty benefits for most nondeficient people and can create important laboratory-test interference.
