Emollients & Barrier Support

Jojoba Esters

A lightweight, skin-conditioning emollient that helps lock in moisture, soften and smooth the skin, support the moisture barrier, and improve suppleness without a heavy or greasy feel.

Key Benefits

  • Helps soften and smooth skin
  • Supports reduced moisture loss
  • Improves suppleness and comfort
  • Provides lightweight emollient slip
  • Enhances product texture and spreadability

How It Works

Jojoba esters deposit flexible, oil-soluble wax molecules across the skin surface. This reduces friction, smooths rough-feeling areas, and creates a light occlusive effect that helps slow evaporation from the stratum corneum.

Different grades behave differently according to processing, chain distribution, melting point, and dispersibility. A small human pilot found that hydrolyzed jojoba esters combined with glycerol reduced transepidermal water loss more than glycerol alone for up to 24 hours, but those findings should not be assigned equally to every jojoba ester grade.

Ingredient Details

INCI Name: Jojoba Esters

Ingredient Type: Wax Ester Emollient

Best For

Normal skin · Dry skin · Combination skin · Sensitive-feeling skin

What It Is

A family of cosmetic wax esters derived from Simmondsia chinensis jojoba wax. Processing can create solid, semisolid, liquid, or hydrolyzed grades tailored for emollience, texture, and formula performance.

What It Does

Conditions the skin with flexible wax esters that improve slip, soften rough texture, and leave a smooth, supple after-feel. The surface film also helps reduce moisture evaporation without requiring a heavy conventional oil.

Jojoba Esters FAQs

Common questions about this ingredient in skincare.

What are jojoba esters?
They are wax esters derived from jojoba liquid wax and processed into cosmetic ingredients with controlled texture, melting behavior, and dispersibility.
Are jojoba esters the same as jojoba oil?
No. Jojoba oil is naturally a liquid wax ester mixture. Jojoba esters are modified or fractionated derivatives designed for specific formulation and sensory properties.
Do they moisturize skin?
They primarily act as emollients and light occlusives, softening skin and helping reduce water loss. Some hydrolyzed grades can complement humectants such as glycerol.
Are jojoba esters heavy or greasy?
They are often selected for smooth, lightweight conditioning, but the final feel depends on the ester grade, concentration, and complete formula.
Can oily or blemish-prone skin use them?
Many users find jojoba-derived emollients comfortable, but no ingredient is universally non-comedogenic. Suitability depends on the full product and individual skin.
What did the cited research test?
A small human pilot tested hydrolyzed jojoba esters together with glycerol and found lower transepidermal water loss than glycerol alone at eight and 24 hours. It did not test every form of jojoba esters.
