SUPPLEMENT LITERACY
How to Read Supplement Ingredients & Labels
Start with the Supplement Facts panel—not the headline on the front of the bottle.

1. Confirm serving size
Amounts are shown per serving, which may include more than one capsule. Compare the serving size with suggested use.
2. Review amounts and units
Read each active ingredient, amount and percent Daily Value where established. A missing Daily Value does not prove an ingredient is ineffective or unsafe.
3. Check overlap and other ingredients
Compare multiple products for repeated nutrients and botanicals. Review capsule materials, colors, flavors and processing ingredients relevant to preferences or sensitivities.
4. Keep a supplement record
Record product name, serving amount, frequency and reason for use. Share it with physicians, pharmacists and registered dietitians, especially before surgery or medication changes.
