Vitamin

Ascorbic Acid

An antioxidant form of vitamin C that helps support radiance and defend against oxidative stress.

Key Benefits

  • Provides potent antioxidant support
  • Promotes brighter-looking skin
  • Helps improve uneven-looking tone
  • Supports collagen-related skin structure
  • Helps soften visible photodamage over time

How It Works

Ascorbic Acid donates electrons to help neutralize reactive oxygen species and regenerate other antioxidant systems. It also serves as a cofactor for prolyl and lysyl hydroxylases, enzymes involved in stabilizing newly synthesized collagen.

It can influence melanin formation partly through interaction with oxidized intermediates and tyrosinase-associated processes. Because it oxidizes easily, a formula that has turned markedly dark orange or brown may have lost potency and should be assessed according to the brand’s stability guidance.

Ascorbic Acid FAQs

Common questions about this ingredient in skincare.

What is Ascorbic Acid?
It is pure L-vitamin C, a topical antioxidant used to support radiance, even tone and visible signs of photodamage.
What concentration is best?
There is no universal ideal. Effective products often use several percent or more, but higher concentrations may increase irritation and are not automatically better.
Why do vitamin C serums use a low pH?
An acidic pH helps stabilize and deliver L-ascorbic acid, though it can also cause temporary tingling or irritation in sensitive skin.
Can it be used with niacinamide?
Yes. Modern formulas and routines can use both ingredients. If your skin is sensitive, applying them at different times may improve comfort.
Can it replace sunscreen?
No. Antioxidant support complements broad-spectrum sunscreen but does not provide reliable SPF or prevent all ultraviolet damage.
How should it be stored?
Keep it tightly closed and protected from heat and light. Follow the package directions, and replace it if the brand advises doing so after significant darkening or odor change.
